DELEGATIONS: Lakeland Xtreme Broncs and Bulls representatives Chad Colbourne and Shawn Metchewais requested financial support in the amount of $7,500 for their Xtreme Bulls Night Out event, which is happening at the Bonnyville Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 29. The for-profit event will feature bull riding, junior barrel racing, and a dance. If approved, the money requested would go towards the cost of renting the rodeo grounds and moving the chutes to a better location in the arena. Council accepted the presentation as information.
A $10,000 request from Big Smoke Bonnyville was heard by Council. Organizers Ryan Chornohos and Robin Tomm explained the event from Aug. 14 to 15 at the Peter Kushnir Ballpark parking lot is a stop on the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) circuit, which is the world’s largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts. Categories contestants can compete in at Big Smoke Bonnyville include Master Series, Backyard, Kids Que, and Drink Ancillary. Council accepted the presentation as information.
Violet Lapointe and Craig Copeland with the Lakeland Region Alberta Winter Games provided Council review of the Games weekend and outlined post event activities. Approximately 1,100 volunteers welcomed 2,143 athletes and coaches from Feb. 13 to 16, along with 201 technical officials’ The event brought over 5,500 visitors to the area. The games are projected to come in under the $1.9 million budget and the organization is currently finalizing billings and reports. While sponsorships came in under expectations, this gap was filled by an extra casino, ticket and souvenir sales and services and supplies gifted in kind. The event feedback was extremely positive, and Violet stated they haven’t received any negative feedback from anyone who attended the games. Council accepted the presentation as information.
DEPUTY MAYOR SWORN IN: Coun. Neil Langridge was sworn in as Deputy Mayor during the meeting. He will take over from Coun. Phil Kushnir, whose term ends June 30, 2026. Deputy Mayor Langridge’s term in the position is from July 1, 2026, to March 1, 2027. Photos from the swearing in can be found below.
STREET SWEEPING POLICY: Council approved Street Sweeping Policy No. 26-PW-107. The policy replaced the previous policy and clarifies priorities, frequencies, and methods. Updates include the introduction of a colour coded priority map, increased sweeping priority in key areas, greater emphasis on service outcomes, inclusion of stockpile location details, and expanded communication methods.
