TOWN OF BONNYVILLE

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 13

MOBILE APP: Residents will soon have a one-stop shop for Town of Bonnyville amenities. Council approved the implementation of a bciti+ Connected Mobile App, which was included in the 2022 Capital Budget and is one of Council’s objectives under the Communication Strategy Priority Focus Area. The predesigned mobile app includes core features in their Community Model, such as service status, news, nonfictions and alerts, a survey tool, calendar, service requests, among others. Administration is aiming for the app to go live October 2022.

LAKELAND LODGE & HOUSING FOUNDATION: Council passed a motion to send a letter to Minister of Seniors and Housing Josephine Pon stating the Town of Bonnyville supports the Lakeland Lodge and Housing Foundation’s decision to demolish the Cold Lake Senior Citizen Lodge, which is located behind the new Lodge in Cold Lake. The new facility was completed in April 2019 and the old building became vacant at that time. The Foundation would like to update the footprint of this site to create a Campus of Care Plan but requires the old Lodge to be demolished first. Connie Surgeson, CAO for Lakeland Lodge and Housing Foundation, has contacted the Alberta Seniors and Housing Department regarding the Foundations desire to demolish this building but they haven’t received authorization from the Ministry to date. As the facility is owned by the provincial government, the Foundation needs the go-ahead from the Ministry before they can demolish the old facility.

NORTHERN LIGHTS LIBRARY SYSTEMS: A letter from the Town will be sent to Minister of Municipal Affairs Ric McIver to advocate for increased library services funding. The correspondence will also endorse a letter sent by the Northern Lights Library Systems as their funding has not been increased in recent years and local municipalities have had the increased expenses for library services downloaded onto them. Population numbers used up to 2022 were outdated and different than the population numbers used to calculate other provincial grants.

RAISE THE WOOF: A table for eight for $400 will be purchased for the Town of Bonnyville for the Bonnyville and District SPCA’s Raise the Woof Fundraiser. The Town will also be donating items for the silent auction that will be happening during the event.

LAKELAND SOCIETY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION: Council approved a monetary donation of $250 for the Lakeland Society for Truth and Reconciliation to assist in their National Day of Truth and Reconciliation activities. The Town’s Peace Officer and members of Council will also be attending these planned activities if they’re able, which includes the Drive Through Town Procession on Sept. 19, Orange Shirt Walk down Main Street on Sept. 30, among other activities.

BRIEFLY: Three former Town of Bonnyville Councillors will be honoured for their dedication to the municipality. Lorna Storoschuk, Rene Van Brabant, and Ray Prevost will be receiving the Alberta Municipalities Distinguished Service Award to recognize them for serving 20 or more years on an Urban Municipal Council. The awards will be handed out during the Alberta Municipalities conference in Calgary.
