The Orphan Well Association (OWA) is preparing to begin work on four historic wells within the Town of Bonnyville as part of a re-abandonment program directed by the Alberta Energy Regulator.
The wells were designated for re-abandonment in November 2025 after testing identified evidence of gas migration. Previous testing has indicated that the wells pose no immediate risk to the public.
Work is expected to begin in September 2026, when crews will expose the buried well casings and install wellheads for additional testing and monitoring. Monitoring will continue through early fall, with re-entry of the four wells tentatively scheduled to begin in late fall.
The OWA does not anticipate significant disruption to nearby residents. Work will generally take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.. Residents near the sites may notice temporary increases in noise and traffic controls as equipment is moved. Impacted community members and organizations will be notified in advance of anticipated disruptions.
The Town will share further updates as project plans and timelines are confirmed.
