MUNICIPAL CENSUS: The Town of Bonnyville will be conducting a 2024 Municipal Census. The 2023 Interim Operating Budget includes $45,000 to complete the census. The purpose of conducting a Municipal Census is to ensure that the Town has accurate population counts that can be used to better plan for community services. This census will also include Bonnyville’s Shadow Population, which is the temporary residents of a municipality who are employed by an industrial or commercial establishment in the municipality and who work at least 120 hours for that employer in the three-month period immediately preceding Census Day. A letter will be sent to the Minister of Municipal Affairs to notify them that the Town wishes to conduct a 2024 Municipal Census.
DELEGATION: Lisa Murphy, the Executive Director for the Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) made a delegation to Council outlining what the local organization offers. Lakeland Centre for FASD offers services to the seven First Nations, four Metis Settlements, one small city, one military base, and several towns and hamlets. Their model focuses on prevention, diagnosis, intervention, and education and training. The Lakeland Centre was the first to offer diagnostic services in Alberta and the first clinic to develop and provide adult services.
PURCHASES: Council approved the purchase of two half ton pick-up trucks for a total cost of $109,364.540 from Tercier Motors.
The purchase of a 2024 gravel truck was awarded to Nortrux for a total of $258,600 and the existing gravel Mack truck will be disposed of at auction.
DONATIONS: A $1,500 donation was approved for the Rhinos U14 Volleyball Club to attend the U14 Nationals taking place in Fredericton, New Brunswick from May 2 to 5 this year.
The Bonnyville Oilmens Society received a $1,000 donation for their Family Free Fun Day at Vezeau Beach from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Council approved a $1,000 sponsorship for the Bonnyville Requins Swim Club for when they compete at the Banja Luka Open International Swim Meet in Banja Luka, Bosnia in May. This will see the Town’s logo included on the winter season t-shirts the athletes wear and the swim meet banner.
A $1,000 donation was approved for the U15 Lakeland Jaguars Female Hockey team for the 2024 Hockey Alberta U15 Female Tier 1 Provincial Championship that’s being held at the Energy Centre in Cold Lake from March 28 to 31.
BRIEFLY: Council provided second and third reading to Bylaw No. 1562-24 – Establish a Naming Committee, which repealed Bylaw No. 1374-11 and appoint a Council Member to sit on the Naming Committee.
A letter of support was ratified to the Lakeland Society for Truth and Reconciliation for their Commemoration Canada Program Grant application.
Policy No. 23-AD-097, the Naming of Development Areas, Roads, Parks and Public Facilities Policy was approved and Policy No. 11-AD-057, the Naming Policy was repealed as a result.
The proposed 2024 Alberta Winter Games Media Proposal from Lakeland Connect for $999 was approved. It includes Games coverage for four days, interviews with area athletes, and four to six videos per day.
