The Bonnyville RCMP were involved in 169 investigations from July 14-21.
On July 14, St. Paul Traffic Services and Bonnyville RCMP were conducting an Impaired Driving Checkstop Joint Forces Operation at Highway 41 and Highway 28. A Ford Escape, displaying an unauthorized Alberta licence plate entered the Checkstop. The driver failed to produce a licence and gave members a false name and he was advised he was being detained. The driver was directed to turn off the engine of the vehicle but refused. A member reached into the open driver’s window in an attempt to remove the keys from the ignition, but the driver accelerated, catching the member’s arm partially inside the vehicle, and pulled the member forward with the momentum of the vehicle. The member fell onto his side on the ground as the vehicle sped off. With the assistance of Police Dog Services, the RCMP engaged in a pursuit with the suspect resulting in the immediate apprehension of the female passenger. The male driver fled on foot but was located and arrested approximately 8 hours later. The member was fortunately not injured but the suspect led RCMP through a farmer’s crop during the pursuit causing thousands of dollars of damage. Bail Hearings were held for 31-year-old Landon Wusyk of Stony Plain, who was charged with 16 offences, and 22-year-old Tiara Marten of Cold Lake, who was charged with 8 offences. Both were remanded into custody until their first appearance on July 18 at which time their matters were adjourned to August 1.
On July 15 at 4:15 PM, a member of the Bonnyville RCMP was on patrol on the 5300 block of 37 Street and observed vehicle bearing a licence plate that didn’t match the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver attempted to park and leave vehicle in the parking lot of a local apartment complex. The member identified the 40-year-old Ardmore man as Ryan Girdler who was a suspended driver and wanted on warrants and the vehicle he was driving was stolen. He was immediately arrested and brought before a Justice of the Peace, who released him to appear in court on August 15 where he’ll faces charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Drive while Prohibited, Altering a VIN and Possession of Meth.
On July 15 at 9:45 PM, the Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a residence on the 4600 block of 51 Avenue where an intoxicated man was screaming then assaulted another male with an animal repellent spray. Upon arrival the 62-year-old resident of Bonnyville was arrested and taken into custody until sober. He was released on paperwork compelling him to court on October 3 to answer to charges of Assault with a Weapon and Mischief Under $5000.
On July 20 at 7:30 PM, the Bonnyville RCMP were called to attend a local hotel where a male was assaulted and robbed. Members arrived and while the suspects had already fled the scene with the victim’s suitcase of belongings, the members determined their identity and located both a short while later walking in town. A 45-year-old male from Kehewin is being charged with Robbery and a 41-year-old male from Bonnyville is being charged with Robbery and Failing to Comply with a Court Condition. They are in custody and awaiting Bail Hearings at the time of this release.
