The Bonnyville RCMP were involved in 158 investigations from September 29 to October 6.
On September 27, between midnight and 4:00 AM, a red 2004 GMC Sierra was stolen in the Town of Bonnyville. RCMP in Cold Lake received a report of a sighting of the vehicle at noon later that same day and again an hour later but were not able to locate it. The truck location the following day was determined to be back in the Bonnyville area but when members attempted to pull it over it fled. On September 29 at 8:30 AM, Bonnyville members located the vehicle in a driveway in Kehewin Cree Nation. Members blocked it in and located a male sleeping inside in the driver’s seat with a machete within reach. The male was immediately arrested and taken into custody for being in possession of the stolen truck. Patrick Cardinal, 30, of Cold Lake is charged with Possession of a Stolen Truck Over $5000, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Disobeying a Court Order. He was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. His next court date is October 17.
On October 3 at 1:00 PM, the Bonnyville RCMP were conducting patrols on Highway 41 South of Bonnyville when they observed a side by side (off highway vehicle) driving in the ditch with no license plate. The member conducted a traffic stop with the operator who was found to have a rifle hidden in his pant leg and under his sweatshirt and had ammunition within reach. Kolten Gadwa, 27, of St. Paul was arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm & Possession of Ammunition in a vehicle. He was brought before a Justice of the Peace and cash bail was set at $750. He has since been released and is set to appear in court on October 17.
On October 3 at 8:30 PM a semi-truck driver collided with a power line on 50 Ave near 56 Street in Bonnyville causing a flash and small explosion resulting in a brief major power outage. The driver left the scene. Thanks to witnesses who noted the company name on the side of the truck, the RCMP were able to track down the registered owner who assisted in identifying who the driver was. The 61-year-old from Grimshaw, Alberta was located and charged with Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision ($405 fine) and operating a semi-trailer without a proper permit ($324 fine).
