BONNYVILLE – In two years’ time, the Lakeland region will play host to a premier multi-sport event at the provincial level.
The Town and MD of Bonnyville, City of Cold Lake, and Village of Glendon are proud to announce they will host the 2026 Alberta Winter Games. The event will see roughly 2,400 youth athletes and coaches coming to the region as they compete to see who’s the best in 18 different sports throughout the region.
“As the Mayor of the Town of Bonnyville, I am both hounored and elated that we, along with our municipal partners, have been chosen to host the prestigious Alberta Winter Games,” expressed Mayor Elisa Brosseau. “This is a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our area’s warmth, hospitality, and passion for sports.”
The local municipalities came together on a Regional Sports Tourism Committee with the purpose of bringing premier sporting events to the area. This collaboration is what made the bid for the 2026 games a success.
Brosseau said, “I am particularly excited about collaborating with our neighbours, to not only bring the games here but to ensure the event’s resounding success. Together, we will create lasting memories and a legacy of excellence for our region. Let the games begin!”
The Alberta Winter Games will be a community effort. A volunteer force of approximately 2,000 volunteers are needed to host a successful event. Keep an eye out for a call for volunteers in the coming months.
This will mark the second time the Town of Bonnyville has hosted the Alberta Winter Games. The first time was in 2010, along with the City of Cold Lake.
