Ready to build North of Expected? Let’s grow, together.

Bonnyville: Powering Alberta’s Energy Frontier

Bonnyville thrives on Alberta’s energy backbone. Positioned on the Cold Lake heavy oil deposit—one of the largest in Canada—and bordering the Athabasca oil sands, the region holds hundreds of billions (even up to ~370 billion) barrels of recoverable resources. Natural gas reservoirs discovered in the 1940s continue to support local demand and industry growth.

Leading energy producers like Imperial Oil’s Cold Lake operation and CNRL’s Primrose‑Wolf Lake thermal in‑situ sites, located just north of town, are powering expansion and innovation in the region. Together, they reinforce Bonnyville’s position as the energy hub north of expected.

Bonnyville: Rooted in the Land, Growing for Tomorrow

From its fur‑trade beginnings nearly 200 years ago, Bonnyville’s economy has always been tied to the land. Today, our producers diversify—from beef cattle and grains to specialty crops, forestry and wild‑game operations—adapting to evolving market demands.

Just outside town at Fort Kent, the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA) advances practical innovations in crop trials, pest and forage research, and regenerative practices.

In town, the Bonnyville Forest Nursery, one of Alberta’s largest reforestation nurseries, dedicates 52,000 ft² of greenhouse space (plus 6 acres) to growing native seedlings and reclamation stock.

Across our region, livestock diversification thrives: elk, deer, llama, wild boar, ostrich, buffalo, and more. Bonnyville is true to its roots—and always moving forward.
