COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

REGULAR MEETING

DEPUTY MAYOR: Coun. Byron Johnson was sworn in as Deputy Mayor. His term begins March 16 and goes until Dec. 31, 2024. Coun. David Sharun will then be sworn in as Deputy Mayor on Jan. 1, 2025. His term will go until Nov. 1, 2025.

JESSIE LAKE TREE LIGHTING: An increase of roughly $100 was approved by Council for the Jessie Lake Tree Lighting, which brings the 2024 Interim Capital Budget line item for the project to $20,100. Prices for the lights are anticipated to increase, but the Town will receive a discount if the lights are ordered before a specific date.

LETTER OF FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: Council approved a letter of financial commitment in the amount of $213,500 for the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs’ bid for the 2025 National Jr. A Championship. The Pontiacs are in the process of re-bidding to become the host community for this event as the previously awarded community is among the teams that departed from the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

LETTER OF SUPPORT: A letter of support was approved for Go East of Edmonton for their Travel Alberta Cooperative Investment Fund grant application. If successful, the funds will be used for a new initiative to grow tourism in the region.

DONATION: The Bonnyville Soccer Association will receive a $500 donation from the Town of Bonnyville to attend the Alberta Soccer Provincials tournament taking place in Edmonton from March 15 to 17. There are five Bonnyville teams competing, including U13 boys, U15 girls, U15 boys, U17 girls & U17 boys.
