COMMUNITY FUTURES BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM: The Beautification Program will continue to be offered to businesses in the Town of Bonnyville. Council approved a request from Community Futures Lakeland to an increase of funding of $,2,405.75 for 2023, which will bring the Town’s contribution to $15,925.75. The Beautification Program has been offered for the past two years and has seen businesses within the Town receive a loan from Community Futures and a grant from the Town to improve the appearance of their premises.
MEETING CANCELATION: The Sept. 26 Regular Council Meeting is cancelled. This was done due to Council having to travel that evening to attend the annual ABMUNIS Conference. The next Regular Meeting of Council will be Oct. 10, 2023.
RETAIL/COMMERCIAL GAP ANALYSIS: Council approved the $29,870 cost to hire FBM Planning Ltd. to complete a Retail/Commercial Gap Analysis. The money will come from the General Capital Reserve.
BYLAW: Bylaw No. 1552-23 – Joint Assessment Review Board and Bylaw No. 1553-23 Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board both passed first reading.
DELEGATIONS: Representatives from Portage College gave Council an update on the services they offer and new partnerships that will better suit their students. Representatives from Deloitte Inc. presented the 2023-2028 Economic Development Action Plan, which was accepted by Council later in the meeting.
LETTERS OF SUPPORT: The Town will be providing a letter of support for LICA for their Government of Canada Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Prevention Fund grant application.
Council also provided a letter of support for the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority regarding the last minute changes to Bill 5 with respect to rules around driving through emergency scenes.
BRIEFLY: The Municipal Planning Commission approved a development permit for a deck in the front yard with conditions.
A $5,000 sponsorship was approved for the Bonnyville Ag Society’s Fall Fair.
A table will be purchased for the Bonnyville and District SPCA’s Raise the Woof fundraiser for the cost of $480.
Council ratified the $200 purchase of four tickets for the Dove Centre’s 50 Anniversary Gala, which is being held on Sept. 25.
Council will decide on the dates of Special Council Meetings for the 2024 Budget Delegations. There are 18 Community Organizations to appear as Budget Delegations at a Fall Council Meeting.
Council passed a motion to purchase up to six tickets to the Twisted Fork and Travel Lakeland Farm Dinner, which is being held on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The Town of Bonnyville will become a member of the Alberta’s Lakeland Destination Management Organization at a cost of $1,774.50.
