Council Highlights March 28
TOWN OF BONNYVILLE
COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING
MARCH 28
PROCLOMATION: Mayor Elisa Brosseau proclaimed April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in the Town of Bonnyville. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects approximately two per cent of Albertans on the autism spectrum. ASD is now recognized as the most common neurological disorder affecting every one in 66 children in Canada, as well as their friends, family, and community. Mayor Brosseau urges all citizens and our community to ‘Light it up Blue’ on April 2 to create a more inclusive world for people with ASD.
PROPERTY TAX WRITE-OFFS: Council directed Administration to write-off $3,157.10 in property taxes for properties that have been removed from the Sportsman Mobile Home Park. Mobile homes receive an assessment and tax notice annually. Owners who remove their mobile home from a municipality are required to notify the Town to obtain a development permit and the property tax department to have the property taxes prorated, however, three properties were removed without the Town’s knowledge.
PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION: The Lakeland Lodge and Housing Foundation’s request for Property Tax Exemption for their property located at 4802 47 Ave. was approved by Council. The Municipal Government Act states that a property used for a charitable or benevolent purpose for the benefit of the general public and owned by a non-profit organization is exempt from taxation, however, it is up to the Municipality to make the determination with respect to whether or not the organization is providing a charitable or benevolent purpose. The property is where the Ste. Anne Church used to be before it was moved to the Bonnyville Museum.
SPONSORSHIPS: The Lakeland Female Development Camp’s request for $4,000 to go towards the all-female hockey camp was approved by Council. The new event will be held at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre from Aug. 21 to 25.
A $550 bronze sponsorship was approved by Council for the 2023 Healthier Communities Golf Tournament at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club.
The U16 AA Lakeland Panthers Hockey Team’s $250 donation request was approved, which will help the local team when they head to playoffs in Camrose.
A $500 bronze sponsorship request was approved for the Lakeland Motorcycle Ride for Dad event. The funds raised are for research and awareness for the fight against prostate cancer.
LETTER OF SUPPORT: A letter of support was ratified for Covenant Health and the Bonnyville Health Foundation. They requested a letter from the Town for their nomination of the Bonnyville Emergency Department for the Rhapsody Health-Care Heroes Award.
COUNCIL INVITATIONS: The Hive Youth Club invited members of Council to their Pipe Ceremony on April 6.
