Protective Services Department Presents Year in Review

BONNYVILLE – The Town of Bonnyville’s Protective Services Department has been kept busy in their last fiscal year.

Peace Officer Wanda Tomm provided the quarterly update to Council during the Nov. 14 Regular Meeting. Although the department only has one Community Peace Officer (CPO), Officer Tomm works alongside numerous Town departments and other external partners when requested.

CPO QUARTERLY REPORT: CPO Wanda Tomm presented the quarterly report to Council and outlined what the Protective Services Department has been up to. From August 2022 to October 2023, Officer Tomm handed out 54 provincial tickets, 46 provincial warnings, 115 bylaw tickets, and 44 bylaw warning tickets. The types of incidents Officer Tomm has investigated includes 138 animal, 114 unsightly properties, 52 garbage, 127 traffic, 28 criminal, and more. Office Tomm has also participated in community events, including the RCMP 150 Year event, RCMP Safe Halloween program, Duclos School’s Remembrance Day Ceremony, Canada Day Parade, among others. Education is a large part of the Protective Services Department. This is done through social media posts as well as content in the Town’s Newsletter.

Alberta RCMP Eastern Alberta District Detachment to implement safe exchange zones

Eastern Alberta – On Nov. 16, 2023, 22 of the 27 detachments of Alberta RCMP’s Eastern Alberta District will be implementing a safe exchange zone program. The other 5 detachments already have a safe exchange zone established, including Bonnyville Detachment.

With the advent of new technologies, Alberta residents actively connect with one and other to conduct sales and purchases. Although many of these transactions occur safely without issue, there are safety risks associated with meeting anyone online. Additionally, there are many other interactions where the public may have concerns about their safety such as child custody, and document exchanges.

BONNYVILLE – Residents who deck their halls for Christmas in Bonnyville have a chance to win gift cards from local businesses this year.
